McAdams finished second at the girls Class I South State powerlifting meet for 1A and 2A schools, advancing the entire team to the state meet. South State was held last Friday at West Lincoln High School.
Velma Jackson had 62 points and McAdams 46. McAdams also finished behind Velma Jackson, a 2A school, at the Class I meet for Region 3.
“Man, they showed a lot of grit. They showed a lot of toughness,” coach Kenneth Nelson said of his lifters. “We didn't have a long turnaround from the (region) meet of February third. But I had a lot of girls who improved on a lot of their lifts. We're closing the gap on Velma Jackson. Hopefully by the next meet, we can make some big gains on them.”
Next is the state meet April 1 at the Mississippi Coliseum. McAdams was second last year.
An MHSAA rule change this year allows the entire teams that finished first or second to advance to the next meet. That means McAdams will have 12 lifters at the state meet, led by four individual champions from South State.
Calissia Hairston won at the 105-pound weight class, Amber Harmon at 114, Shawnessey Martin at 165 and Jailyn Riley at the 198.
McAdams will host the boys’ South State meet Monday.
