The opening match of the season for the Kosciusko golf team was delayed when a match scheduled for last week at Redbud Springs Country Club was canceled. “It was too wet. They weren't allowing anyone on the course,” said KHS coach Logan Cheek.
The Whippets are scheduled to play Mar. 19 at Louisville Country Club against Nanih Waiya and possibly some other teams.
Kosciusko will be led by senior Jacob Gibson, who averaged about 74.5 last year. He just missed qualifying for the 4A state match, losing out on an extra hole playoff.
He will be joined by Carter Jones, a junior and three junior high players who represent “the future of the team,” according to Cheek. Twins Jeremy and Josh Gibson (Jacob's cousins) are eighth graders and Luke Terry a seventh grader.
Cheek is especially excited about Terry. “He has great potential. By the end of the season, he may be my No. 2 player.”
Jacob and Jeremy Gibson are battling hand injuries, but should be 100 percent by the time the first match is played, Cheek said. “Hopefully Spring Break will keep them indoors and they won't try to push it.”
Kosciusko will compete in Region 4-4A with Choctaw Central, Greenwood, Newton County, Northeast Lauderdale and West Lauderdale. The 4A state match will be played the first week of May at an undetermined course.
“Prior to the rain, I felt we would be competitive with everyone we played,” Cheek said. Redbud Springs is the team's home course.
Kosciusko does not have a girls team.
