The Mississippi Gridiron Youth League will delay its fall football season until the spring due to the pandemic.
League president Antonio Riley issued a statement from the league saying “After much thought and careful consideration, we have decided there is no safe way to return to a full, productive, and enjoyable season this fall. Because we are continuing to see positive cases spike in Mississippi we have decided to cancel our Fall Season and have a Spring Football Season in 2021. This provides the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) more time to understand this deadly virus before we allow our kids to resume play.”
The spring season is scheduled for March 20 until May 1, to be followed by playoffs, with the championship May 15.
Competition is in four age groups – 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12, each playing tackle football.
League teams are: Kosciusko Cardinals, Choctaw County Steelers; Winston County Chiefs, Durant Raiders (two teams), Starkville Cowboys, Starkville Saints, Columbus Falcons, West Point Packers, West Point Green Wave, Tri-County Falcons, Grenada Panthers, and Macon Broncos.
The Kosciusko Cardinals have 92 players for the four teams and 24 cheerleaders who cheer for all the teams.
