The Lady Whippets went 4-1 last week to remain in firm grasp of the Region 4-4A standings with a 6-0 record in region contests. Kosciusko’s four wins last week moved the team to 22-1 on the season.
“We competed well this week,” Kosciusko coach Tony Terry said. “Saw two good pitchers; battled with them. The playoffs are coming up, so we are trying to fine-tune what we are doing.”
The Lady Whippets host Leake Central on Tuesday and travel to Leake Central on Thursday. The cap the week on Friday at Germantown.
“Big week as we try to clinch the division championship,” Terry said.
Kosciusko defeated Winona 6-0 last Monday behind a sparkling performance from pitcher Katie Mitchell.
Mitchell went seven innings and allowed just three hits while striking out eight.
Emma Rush swatted two singles as the Lady Whippets’ lone multi-hit batter. AnnaLeigh Jones tripled, while Campbell Blaine doubled. Kelly Hood, Katie Mitchell and Brooke Mitchell hit singles.
Rush and Blaine scored a team-high two runs.
Kosciusko and Noxubee County had a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, but the Lady Tigers forfeited to give the Lady Whippets two wins.
Lewisburg handed Kosciusko its first loss of the year on Friday after earning a 3-0 victory.
On Saturday, the Lady Whippets responded in resounding fashion with a 16-6 win against Senatobia.
Laken Milner hit a home run in the contest.
Blaine finished with three doubles, Josie Meggs tallied two triples and a single. Maddy Gilmore hit two doubles and a single and Hood ended with two singles.
Meggs scored four runs, while Hood added three. Katie Mitchell, Milner and Blaine contributed two runs apiece.
Gilmore earned the win from the circle. She allowed seven hits and struck out three over five innings. Emmagail Kelley pitched one inning of relief, and she allowed three hits and one walk.
