Kosciusko went 2-0-1 last week to improve to 15-6-1 on the season.
More importantly, the Whippets kept their Region 4-4A record on the year pristine, ensuring at least a second-place regular-season finish, as they are currently tied with New Hope at first in the standings.
“We got two big district wins over Louisville, and that solidified second place for us at least,” Whippets coach Jon Jones said. “I thought we swung the bat pretty well on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our pitchers threw well on both nights, and did a really good job pounding us on.”
The Whippets earned a 17-5 win against Louisville last Tuesday before earning an 8-2 win one day later against the Wildcats. Kosciusko and Morton played to a 4-4 tie Saturday, and led 2-0 against Newton County in the fourth inning before its second contest Saturday was called due to rain.
Kosciusko now shifts its focus to this week, where it has a pair of key Region 4-4A contests with New Hope on Tuesday and Thursday, which will go a long way in determining the region leader.
Chase Morgan exploded for three RBIs last Tuesday to lead the Whippets past Louisville. Evan Scott, Matthew Allen and Tyler Vancise contributed two RBIs apiece.
Kosciusko led 6-0 after the first inning and added two more runs in the third. The Whippets tallied four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to secure the run-rule-shortened win.
Nolen Yullie picked up the pitching win for the Whippets. He struck out five, walked one and yielded three earned runs and four hits from the mound.
The Whippets used a six-run third inning last Wednesday to sweep the Wildcats on the week.
Morgan again led Kosciusko with three RBIs. Brandon Black added two more.
Eldarius Roby’s three hits were a team-high. Black, Morgan, Micah Parker chipped in with two hits apiece.
River Burrell led the way with two stolen bases.
Heath McBride pitched five innings of six-hit ball to secure the pitching win. He only allowed two earned runs and struck out two.
Kosciusko led 1-0 at the end of the first inning and 2-0 at the end of the second before its six-run third.
On Saturday, the Whippets scratched out just three hits against Morton, but it was enough to result in a 4-4 tie.
Justin Nunn was 2-for-4, while Parker was 1-for-3.
Nunn and Will Cook each finished with one stolen base.
Morgan threw four hitless innings from the mound. He fanned five Morton batters and walked two.
The Panthers led 4-0 after two innings before Kosciusko cut its deficit to half with a two-run third. The Whippets added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“It’s going to be tough,” Jones said of the impending region showdown. “They have a good club; two really good arms. We just have to play our game. Get out there and do what we have to do to fill up the zone. Make routine plays and play small ball and that kind of stuff to put the pressure on. They lost a number of seniors last year, but so did we, so there’s still going to be two pretty good teams matched up against each other. We just have to find a way to get the wins. Being first in the district means you get a four-seed from the other side of the district so that always helps. Hopefully, we’ll do that, and we can get those wins.”
