Kosciusko High School is inching closer toward naming its new head football coach.
After robust interest from more than three dozen candidates, Kosciusko athletic director Macy Wilbanks is confident the school search committee will find the right candidate for the job.
Kosciusko officials will interview six applicants.
“I know that we had about 40 applicants,” Wilbanks said. “We’ve narrowed that down to a few who we are interviewing. That’s where we are. We haven’t really set in stone anything beyond where we’re at right now.”
While the search committee would like to hire someone as soon as possible, Wilbanks said selecting the right candidate is its primary objective.
“We’re going to try to move as quickly as we can, but we also want to make sure that we’re getting who we want,” Wilbanks said. “We’re not going to rush ourselves into making a decision before we’re completely ready for that.”
Former Whippets head coach Kelly Causey resigned from his post in November after going 9-25 in three seasons. Kosciusko went 3-8 last season and appeared in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.
Kosciusko fielded its first football team in 1921, and 22 coaches have led the program during that span.
“We’re excited about the guys we have coming in for interviews,” Wilbanks said. “I think it’s a great group of guys, and I’m really excited about hiring one of them.”
