Kosciusko’s girls and boys soccer teams both claimed Region 4-3A championships as the program combined to go 2-0 on the week.
The boys defeated Raymond, 4-2, on Friday to claim the region crown. Billy Paul Russell recorded a hat trick with three goals, and Thomas Sims added another to round out Kosciusko’s goal scorers.
“This is the second in three years,” Kosciusko coach Greg Cooper said. “We clinched it two years ago, and this is our second one. That just speaks volumes for them.”
The Lady Whippets used a decisive 8-1 victory against Raymond to give the girls their first regional title in recent memory.
Raven Pernell (3), Mary Patton Henderson (2), Anna Catherine Cheek, Presley Fulgham and Anna Caroline Pickle tallied goals in the contest.
“Them clinching the district is the first time that I’ve been with them, and I’ve been with them since 2004, and that’s the first time we’ve won our district,” said Cooper, who also coaches the Lady Whippets. “A huge step for us in that regard.”
Both the Kosciusko girls and boys return to the pitch on Jan. 7 at Richland.
