Kosciusko girls soccer coach Greg Cooper feels the United States victory in the Women's World Cup will have a positive influence on the sport at the grassroots level. The U.S. team defeated The Netherlands 2-0 Sunday to repeat as FIFA Women’s World Cup champions.
“What I saw throughout the tournament was more and more girls watching it and paying attention to it,” Cooper said. “It definitely has a buzz going. I think it's going to be good for local sports. Being competitive and winning always draws it.”
He used the sometimes dreaded “D” word for the U.S, team. “You hate to use the word dynasty, but they are kind of making one.”
He also noted improvement in the men's team, which lost to Mexico in the Gold Cup championship game in competition with teams from North and Central America. That came one year after the U.S. failed to qualify for the World Cup with an embarrassing loss to Trinidad and Tobago.
“I hate to say rebuild, but they (the U.S. team) look a lot better,” Cooper said.
