Kosciusko finished tenth in the girls 4A state cross country meet and seventeenth in the boys meet last week.
Kosciusko entered five runners each in the boys and girls races, all underclassmen. Team scores were 278 for the girls and 450 for the boys.
Coach Greg Cooper said he is “extremely proud” of his runners’ performances. “Each and every one of them improved throughout the year. And they will continue to get better.”
The top performer was sophomore Markayla McBride, 18th in the girls race with a time of 23:02.45 for 5,000 meters over the hilly Choctaw Trails course. She was followed by freshman Reid Hutchinson 24th, freshman Anna Catherine Cheek 56th, eighth grader Emma Rhodes 69th and sophomore Emmalee Myers 134th.
Raven Parnell, an eighth grader who set the school record of 22:43.28 in a meet at French Camp, was unable to compete due to a back injury.
The boys were led by brothers Gustavo and Jorge Orduna. Gustavo, a junior, was 24th in 19:05.65 and Jorge, a freshman, finished 37th in 19:39.33. Cody Price, a junior, was 125th, freshman Cooper Sparks 137th and eighth grader Lem Whitcomb 138th.
Cooper expects all 10 runners from the state meet to compete again next year, and he hopes to add depth with additional runners. “We know the future for cross country looks good.”
Corinth swept the 4A team championships. Individual winners were Keegan Leverett of St. Stanislaus for the boys in 17:25.42 and Emma Claire James of West Lauderdale for the girls in 20:54.44.
