With Kosciusko’s 20-0 win against Leake Central last Thursday, the Lady Whippets claimed their seventh-consecutive Region 4-4A title. The win not only clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs, but it also capped a week in which Kosciusko swept Leake Central 35-5 in two games.
Kosciusko (24-1, 8-0) has yet to learn its second-round opponent, but it will have three games this week to fine-tune its game before the postseason. The Lady Whippets host West Lauderdale in doubleheader action Tuesday before closing the regular season at Germantown Thursday.
“Every time we go out there and play, I see where they’ve grown up some,” Kosciusko coach Ton Terry said. “Any time you have some new starters, you’re going to have some bumps in the road here and there, but I’ve been proud of them. They’ve produced and they’ve adjusted to the game.”
Both of the Lady Whippets’ wins were called early in accordance with the run rule.
Kosciusko defeated Leake Central 20-0 last Thursday.
Katie Mitchell allowed just one hit and struck out five over four innings to earn the win in the circle.
Mitchell also tallied four hits, including two doubles. Emma Rush and Campbell Blaine had three hits. Kaitlyn Howell, Kelly Hood and Maddy Gilmore collected two hits apiece.
Josie Meggs had a team-high four runs, while Emmagail Kelley, Blaine, Mitchell and Rush finished with three apiece.
Mitchell also was credited with pitching the Lady Whippets to a 15-5 win last Tuesday. She tallied 11 strikeouts over six innings.
Blane, Mitchell, Rush and Meggs each posted two hits. Blaine hit a triple, Mitchell’s two hits were doubles and Meggs swatted a double to go with six RBIs.
Hood ended with game-best four RBIs. Rush contributed three, and Blaine and Laken Milner contributed two apiece.
The Lady Whippets are scheduled to begin their title defense on April 22.
“I think we’ll be fine,” Terry said. “We know we have a bye in the first round, and we picked up some games this coming week, and it’ll be a real test for us. We have West Lauderdale twice and we have Germantown. That’ll be three really good games for us leading into the playoffs.”
