Another 30-plus point effort, this time through the air, moves coach Crowder’s Trojans to 2-0
The offensive floodgates remained open for the Central Holmes Christian School Trojans’ week two, 34-0, victory over visiting Deer Creek School.
However, Head Coach Jim Crowder’s Trojans took a different route than the rush-happy attack of week one.
“We shuffled some things around because of what injuries have forced us to do,” Crowder said. “It led to a kind of weird week of practice.”
A “weird” week of practice led to 27 first-half points which were scored by four different players. Receiver Lake Melton caught a Nathan
Taylor pass on the opening drive, before Pacey Thompson ran one in on the Trojans’ second possession.
Backup quarterback Brad Robinson connected with Ethan Ables for another passing TD, and Luke Smith recovered a Deer Creek fumble for a touchdown.
“We talked about imposing our will from the first snap and that’s what we did,” Crowder said. “We opened it up a little more tonight.
“They loaded the box and went man. We knew we’d have an advantage on the outside and fortunately we were able to capitalize on that.”
The starters returned for a few more “quality” snaps in the second half, and Taylor connected with Ables for the receivers second TD of the night.
“Nathan had complete command of the offense,” Crowder said. “He looked very poised, the way we expected he would.”
Crowder noted how well Jacob Sykes, Colton Sumner and Lawrence Wiley played.
“We’re going to need everybody on the team for us to have the kind of year we want to,” the coach said. “And (Friday) was a big step in that direction.”
CHCS next plays Friday on the road at Winona Christian.
