The French Camp softball team had two dramatic wins last week, a 9-8 victory over Nanih Waiya and a walk off 6-5 win over Winona in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Winona won the opener 12-2.
“They have a never-quit attitude,” coach Todd Chesser said of his players. “They play with a lot of heart.”
Against Nanih Waiya, the Lady Panthers broke a 7-7 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two out double by Laney Scott, then held on for the win when
Nanih Waiya scored once in the seventh. Emory Peacock reached on an error and Aubrey Burrell doubled before Scott's game-winning hit.
The Lady Panthers' 13-hit attack included a double and two singles each by Peacock, Burrell and Abby Leathers, a single and double by Scott and two singles by Brianna Grice.
“Our hitting has improved,” Chesser said.
The second Winona game was tied 5-5 when French Camp came to bat in the bottom of the fifth of a five-inning game. Scott walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball scored on a grounder by Leathers, beating the throw from shortstop.
The Panthers had only four hits, but benefited from 12 walks. Leathers had a single and double and Kalee McDaniel doubled.
Scott had a double in the loss to Winona.
Chesser also had praise for the pitching of Brice and Burrell. “They really pounded the strike zone. Their first pitch is going to be a strike more times than not. They're pitching their hearts out.”
French Camp will be off for spring break. The next game is March 19 at home against Sebastopol.
