The French Camp softball team swept Ray Brooks in a doubleheader last week following a loss to Ethel. The results left the Lady Panthers in fourth place in the five-team Region 5-1A with a 2-4 record.
French Camp defeated Ray Brooks 13-2 and 8-5.
“My team was more comfortable in the box, something we have been trying to do,” said Coach Sarah Skidmore. “They were a lot more aggressive. We just need to maintain that.”
In the opener, Brooklyn Box and Brianna Brice led a 12-hit attack for the Lady Panthers. Box had a single, double and homer, drove in four runs and scored twice. Grice had three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Grice was the winning pitcher allowing two hits, with four strikeouts in four innings.
French Camp trailed 5-3 in the nightcap before scoring four runs in the third and one in the fourth. Box had two singles and a double and Grice a single and double with two RBIs. Cadence Tiller also drove in two runs and Kayla Till scored twice. Box went the distance for the win allowing two earned runs on six hits, with eight strikeouts.
Box and Grice had the Lady Panthers' only hits against Ethel and Caroline Anderson the team's only RBI.
Box is the Lady Panthers' leading hitter with a.464 average. Grice is batting .429, Haleigh Outlaw .357 and Abby Leathers .345
French Camp was set to play Nanih Waiya Tuesday and has a home game Thursday against Noxapater. The Lady Panthers have a loss against each of those teams, but will probably need wins in both to advance to the MHSAA 1A playoffs.
The top three teams from the region qualify for the playoffs, with the winner receiving an opening-round bye and the next two playing best-of-three series against teams from Region 8-1A in South Mississippi, beginning April 20.
The Lady Panthers will complete the regular season with road games Friday against Starkville Christian and next Tuesday at J.Z. George.
