The French Camp softball team finished the season on a high note with a 20-1 victory over J.Z. George.
“This year I saw a lot of growth in my girls,” said coach Sarah Skidmore. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to pull off being in the playoffs. We made a lot of errors in the field in midseason when it was a crucial time. But this is a different team I saw play today, I saw all the growth we have had come out. I’m really proud of my team.”
French Camp jumped on J.Z. George with 11 runs in the first. Brookelyn Box had a homer and single during the inning, Caroline Anderson doubled and Brianna Grice tripled. Box added a triple and a sacrifice fly during an eight-run third. Abby Leathers reached base four straight times with two singles and two walks.
Grice pitched the first two innings, retiring six straight batters, five on strikes.
With only one senior, Box, in the starting lineup, Skidmore is optimistic about the future.
“Next year and the years after are going to be fantastic,” she said. “We have three juniors. Then there is a whole slew of sophomores, freshmen, and eighth graders coming up, We’re going to be a team to contend with in the future.”
French Camp finished 5-9.
Box led the Lady Panthers offensively with a .475 average, four doubles, two triples, three homers and 17 RBIs. Leathers, an eighth grader, batted .447 and Grice, a sophomore, .381.
