The French Camp slow pitch softball team will compete in a jamboree at Eupora Saturday and will open the regular season with a home game against Vardaman Monday.
In a sport where the ball is constantly in play, coach Todd Chesser said sound defense will be a key. “Cutting down on errors,” is the key he said, while adding “Getting key hits and being smart in the field,” is also important.
Key players include sophomore shortstop Abby Leathers, senior infielder Brianna Grice, her sister sophomore pitcher Maci Grice and senior catcher Haleigh Outlaw.
With the number of schools fielding slow pitch teams continuing to dwindle, the MHSAA will have only two classes this year, Class I for 1A, 2A and 3A schools and Class II for 4A, 5A and 6A. French Camp will compete in Region 5 for Class I with Ethel, McAdams, Philadelphia, and Union.
