Hogan Briscoe was recently named head football coach at Ethel High School after former head coach Steve Stone retired and he is excited to get started.
“First of all, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work with the people I work with and the kids I work with,” said Briscoe. “I can’t say enough about the people I teach with and the people I coach with and the support from the staff and kids here has been great. That’s why we are here, to influence kids in a positive light.”
Briscoe graduated from Kosciusko High School in 2009 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Mississippi State University in 2014. He coached the offensive and defensive lines at McAdams in 2014 before moving to Ethel High School in 2015 in the same position. Briscoe is the assistant Tiger Baseball coach as well.
“At first I was a little apprehensive about taking the job being as young as I am, but through talking to coach (Jim) Wood and coach (Steve) Stone, they made me feel more comfortable with it,” added Briscoe. “I felt that I had the people around me that I needed and the support I needed to go ahead and take the job.”
Briscoe, who was born and raised in Kosciusko, was just recently married to the former Kayla Collins of Ecru and she is a teacher as well in Kosciusko.
“I’ve lived around here my whole life and this is pretty much home to me,” added Briscoe. “The support from people in Ethel and Kosciusko, all of Attala County really, has been tremendous and I’m grateful for it. But at the end of the day, I’m not here for me; I’m here for the kids. I just want to help an average kid bump up a notch and I want to help a good kid bump up to a great kid. I just want to help kids get better, whether it’s in the classroom or on the field; that’s what I want to do.”
Briscoe speaks highly off all the coaches around him who all share the same philosophy about improving kids on the field and in the classroom at Ethel High School.
“There is nothing like the high of a football Friday night,” concluded Briscoe. “I haven’t had that feeling since high school and decided that I wasn’t done with it. There is no feeling quite like a Friday night and coaching is the closest that I have come to that.”
