The Central Holmes Trojans went old school last week with two-a-day practices, beginning last Monday.
“It was a good week,” Central Holmes coach Jim Crowder said. “We had pretty physical two-a-day practices. We were able to go all five days and had some good, physical practices. Our depth is going to be an issue, but it is going to be an issue for most schools our size. We are just trying to find the right spot for most of these guys. We still have two weeks before we play, but we have to get after it and we are just trying to get healthy right now.”
Crowder said he had 23 players out for practice. The Trojans will scrimmage Bayou on Thursday at 4 p.m. and will kick off the season on Aug. 16 against Park Place in Lexington.
Central Holmes starts school this week, something Crowder is glad to see.
“It will help to get the kids in a routine,” Crowder said. “You get used to the routine and it will be nice to have two weeks to get used to the routine before we play. One year in Alabama, we played before school started and it was chaos. This week will be more about us than Bayou or Park Place. We will spend the majority of time working on us.”
Crowder said he is still moving players around trying to find the right places for them.
“We are still trying to figure out what we are good at and what our identity is going to be,” Crowder said. “We have to get better at what we are doing. With only 23 players, everybody is going to have a major role. We just need our guys to sell out to the role they are given and it’s our job as coaches to make sure they can do what we are asking and can do it well.”
