Landon Rawson found the Southeast Louisiana University coaches and campus to be just right for him so the Central Holmes senior and Kosciusko resident signed to play baseball for the Lions earlier this winter.
“I visited a couple of other places,” he said. “I just thought the coaches there are the best fit for me and I really like the campus. It’s kind of a smaller campus. Not too small, but not too big either.”
Rawson attended Kosciusko High School as a freshman before transferring to Central Holmes. “A lot of my friends went there. They were trying to get me to go over there and I decided it was time.”
Rawson has starred on the mound and in the outfield for Central Holmes. As a junior he batted .410 and was 5-1 with two saves, a 1.3 ERA and 47 strikeouts.
“Landon is where he is because of all the hard work he has put into it,” said Central Holmes coach Tony Banks. “He is certainly an asset to our club and will be as asset there (Southeast Louisiana).
“He’s a main player for our team, good teammate and good work ethic. I think his potential is unlimited.”
Rawson was recruited as both a pitcher and an outfielder. He enjoys both, but prefers being on the mound. “I like being able to control the game.”
He became a pitcher after transferring to Central Holmes. “We kind of have a rule as a small school that everybody is a pitcher until we tell them they are not,” Banks said.
Southeast Louisiana is a Division I school in Hammond 70 miles north New Orleans and 40 mile east of Baton Rouge that competes in the Southland Conference.
