Sha’Tikka Greer, a recent McAdams High School graduate, was the winner in a statewide essay contest sponsored by the Mississippi Council on Economic Education. She said the topic for the essay was “What would I do if I had to buy a stock.”
Greer was a member of a three-girl team from McAdams that won Region 4 stock market competition that had teams invest a hypothetical $100,000 over a 13-week period. Other team members were Demeria Moore and Mary Smith.
Winners were determined by the percentage of growth in comparison with the Standard & Poor 500 index. With a diversified portfolio that included stocks, bonds and mutual funds, the McAdams team outperformed S&P by 2%.
In the essay, Greer said she would purchase stocks, such as Amazon, that she felt would increase in value.
A party in her honor was held at Regions Bank in Kosciusko. “I was very surprised. I had no idea what was going on,” she said.
She will begin her freshman year at Jackson State University next month. It’s the school she has always wanted to attend, and she plans to major in education, with a goal of becoming a math teacher.
Greer was a two-sport athlete at McAdams in basketball and volleyball.
