City officials voted this week to borrow $252,000 to finance Kosciusko’s share of the cost of a big water and sewer system expansion. Contracts totaling $643,889.70 for the project were authorized two weeks ago. The city and the federal government will split the cost 50-50.

The board of supervisors agreed Monday to let Choctaw County authorities house their long term jail inmates at Attala county’s prison farm. Members of the board said they will accept Choctaw prisoners on the basis that the inmate can perform duties at the prison farm. He will receive food and lodging, but no money in return.

Burke Shade’s independent ladies basketball team placed third in the second Annual Ladies Red Carpet basketball tournament held at Vicksburg Jan. 31. Members of the team are Peggy Ables, Brenda Foster, Rita Cummins, Barbara Suggett, Patsy Burns and Tennie Brown. Dale Nowell is coach.

Martha O’ Briant, a junior from Vaiden High School is writing her own page in the Big Black Conference record book and compiling figures unheard of on a state-wide basis. Probably chief among her accomplishments is the fact she holds the record of scoring more points in one single game than any other girl in history. She holds the highest percentage in a year, that of 36.3 points per game, and capped the free pitch record with 381 in a season.

Cliff Comfort of Kosciusko has been elected to a two year term as section communications manager for Mississippi in the American Radio League. He spends a part of each night chatting with folks via radio. About 40 Mississippians “meet” at their transmitters every night, he said for a practice session.

After a decade of service to Kosciusko High School athletics, boys basketball coach Stirling Madden turned in his resignation to the board of trustees Tuesday night to pursue another administrative career elsewhere.

Attala Lawn and Garden has opened for business in the former quarters of Massey’s Landing on Highway 12 in Kosciusko. Owners Charles and Karen Dickerson offer a full line of Husqvarna Forest and Garden products.

The Strand Theater will be closed for one to two months for remodeling, according to owner Bryan Page who said his plans include making improvements in the lobby, restrooms and replacing or repairing seats in the auditorium. In addition, he said the viewing screen will be cleaned, the sound system and lighting improved. The movie house will be open seven days a week instead of five and, ticket prices will remain the same.

Carol Lehner assumed her duties Feb. 1 as librarian at the Attala County Library. She replaces Pat Gross who moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Demetrius McCormick has been named a STAR student for the 1993- ‘94 school year at Kosciusko High School. Mrs. Flora Hannah has been designated as STAR teacher for having made the greatest contribution to the STAR student’s scholastic achievement.

Mrs. Sadie Terry was honored for 50 years membership in Rob Morris Chapter No. 134, Order of Eastern Star, at a program held at the masonic hall.
