To the Editor:
There is a lot to agree with regarding Sue Harmon’s letter to the Editor in the Jan. 10 edition of the Star Herald, but I take issue with her mischaracterization of the Republican party. Because she put a negative spin on her comments, I feel I must defend the Republican party as the best option to take Mississippi into the future. On a national level, the Republican party maintains an agenda of individual liberty and limited government, while the Democratic party has been overtaken by a bizarre hybrid of socialists, communists and Marxists that has an agenda of taking America down into the dark abyss of their “new and improved” democratic socialism.
Ms. Harmon listed all of the seats that are on the ballot in the 2019 election and they are all currently held by Democrats and have been for decades. A 60 plus year track record of zero growth and development indicates an urgent need for change. Tip O’Neil is credited with saying, “All politics is local” and I suggest that with a change in local governance, Attala County can enter a new era of economic growth that can lead to more jobs, higher wages and a community that our kids will want to stay in and help generate self-sustaining continued growth. The issues of closed or dilapidated schools and poorly maintained roads can only be addressed by qualified growth minded individuals that are willing to step up and run for county offices. In 2019 there is an opportunity to get involved and chart a new course for Attala County, but, unlike Ms. Harmon, I feel that course will be best navigated with Republicans at the helm!
And, by the way, the lottery is a case of the State bending to the will of the people, not the State imposing a back door tax. This one a few examples of collecting tax revenue that people gladly pay as they exercise their individual liberty and keep Mississippi dollars in Mississippi!
