Residents in Attala and surrounding counties will get to vote for two of the three contested races for the Mississippi Supreme Court and both contested races for the Court of Appeals in the Nov. 8 election.
One local Supreme Court justice and one local Court of Appeals judge will be running unopposed.
Four candidates will be vying for the vacant spot in district 3 after current Justice Ann Lamar of Senatobia chose not to seek re-election. Running for the spot include attorney John Brady of Columbus, Circuit Judge Bobby Chamberlin of Hernando, attorney Steve Crampton of Tupelo and Judge James T. Kitchens of Caledonia. Justice Jimmy Maxwell will be running unopposed for the other spot on the bench after being appointed in January to succeed former justice David Chandler.
District 3 includes Attala, Carroll, Montgomery, Choctaw and Winston counties.
Holmes, Leake, Neshoba, Madison and Yazoo counties will also see a contested Supreme Court race with current judge Jim Kitchens of Crystal Springs being challenged by Court of Appeals Judge Kenny Griffis of Ridgeland.
Voters in Attala County will see contested Court of Appeals races in District 2 and District 3. District 2 includes western Attala, Montgomery, Leake and Madison counties along with Holmes, Carroll, Yazoo counties, while district 3 is eastern Attala, Leake and Madison counties along with Winston and Neshoba counties.
Judge Ceola James of Vicksburg will be seeking re-election in District 2, with attorney Latrice Westbrooks of Jackson is challenging him. In District 3 Judge Jack Wilson of Madison will look face two opponents after being appointed to the spot in mid-2015. He will go up against county judge Ed Hannan of Madison and attorney Dow Yoder of Ridgeland.
Judge Jim E. Greenlee of Oxford is unopposed for the District 1 spot that includes eastern Montgomery County and Choctaw County.
The deadline for voter registration is October 8 with absentee voting beginning of Oct. 29.
