Marvin “Pop” Lawrence, a current member of the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen, died Thursday, March 3, at the age of 75.
Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft announced Lawrence’s death with an official statement released to city workers and media members.
“It is with much sadness and regret that we inform you that City of Kosciusko Alderman Marvin ‘Pop’ Lawrence passed away this morning,” Cockroft stated in the release. “Alderman Lawrence will be greatly missed, and we ask that the community be in prayer for his family.”
Lawrence served the city as the Ward 1 alderman since March 2010 when he was elected to fulfill the unexpired term of his wife, Martha Kate Lawrence. Lawrence was re-elected in July 2013. Lawrence also served three terms as Attala County Sheriff.
When an aldermen seat is vacated, the city has 10 working days to set a date for a special election to fill the seat. City officials expect to set a date at their next scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, March 15. The election date must be no fewer than 30 days and no more than 45 days from the date when it is set.
Qualifying for the vacated seat will begin on Wednesday, March 16. There is no party affiliation for a special election. To qualify, a person must be a registered elector in the city and obtain 50 signatures on a petition that will be available at Kosciusko City Hall.
