Three children died in a house fire in northern Attala County early Saturday, fire officials said.
The incident happened just after midnight on Attala Road 3217 near the Friendship Community. Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail said that the children’s ages ranged from 4 to 11 years old.
County firefighters were called to the residence and were notified that children were trapped inside. Attala County Emergency Management Director Danny Townsend said that the house had already collapsed when firefighters arrived on the scene. After firefighters got the flames under control, they were able to locate the deceased children inside the bedroom of the small home. The parents were on the scene but were unharmed, officials said.
The official cause of the fire has not been released, but is believed to be from a space heater in the bedroom, a family member said. The investigation was turned over to Attala County Coroner Sam Bell and the State Fire Marshal.
Donations for the family of John Leach are being taken at Home Hardware in Kosciusko. Williamsville Baptist Church is also accepting men’s, women’s and children’s (girl) clothing donations. The Tin Shack Grill is also accepting donations.
