Growth at Holmes CC Attala was the main topic of conversation Monday as college director Nancy McRight met with Dr. Angela Mayfield, executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board.
McRight gave Mayfield a tour of campus, discussing The Attala Center’s programs, faculty members and students, including classrooms for the nursing program currently under construction.
“The community college has always been open access and we are adaptive and responsive to the needs of our local communities,” Mayfield said to the Kosciusko Rotary Club later in the day. “It is very difficult to be everything to everyone, but we do our best to provide opportunities, because we want people to have a better quality of life.”
Mayfield said the states community colleges have enrollments at approximately 75K, but also serve hundreds of thousands more through career-readiness. The Holmes Community College campuses serve approximately 29K students in non-credit classes.
“My vision is one of partnerships,” Mayfield added. “I always believe that you are much stronger when you work together. We are not only working with institutions, but with universities, k-12 and our state agencies, accomplishing a lot of things in a very small amount of time. Community Colleges are one of the best investments that you can make with a 4-to-1 return on money.”
