One student created a solar cell with blueberries and titanium dioxide and another created a new water filtration system.
Those two Kosciusko science fair projects would finish as the top projects at the North Regional Science Olympiad Competition last week at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. Joseph Davide finished second place in the Best of Fair competition for his project titled “DSSC’s and their potential for clean energy,” while the group of Riley Watson and Mark Palmertree finished third for their project titled “Cleaning it Up.”
Kosciusko students also picked seven first place medals going to Davide, Vanessa Martinez, Britt Grace, Gabbie Kelley, Zach Kinney, Cheryiah Hill and Dhruv Patel. Second place medals were awarded to Watson, Palmertree, Loveish Sarolia, Bailey Britt, Camryn Greer, Karyme Peralta, Allison Vancise, Max Burdine, Lane Outlaw and Josie White. Jatavius Herron was awarded a third place medal, while special awards were given to Patel, Hill, Vancise and Grace in the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
Grace was also awarded the Yale Science and Engineering Association Award for Most Outstanding Exhibit in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or Chemistry, while Patel was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for Ability and Creativity in Vitro Biology. Davide received a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for excellence in atmospheric or related sciences by the American Meteorological Society.
The Kosciusko Science Club qualified for the state competition at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg on March 31.
