The field is now set for municipal elections.
The deadline to file for election was last Friday with contested mayoral races in Kosciusko and Ethel. Kosciusko, along with Sallis, will also see contested races for alderman positions.
Kosciusko
Longtime mayor Jimmy Cockroft will be seeking re-election against candidate Dorothy Patrick. Three alderman positions will also be contested with Alderman-At-Large Tim Kyle being challenged by Billy Coffee. Ward 1 Alderman Taylor Casey will face an opponent in Rafael Douthard, while Ward 2 Alderman Henry Daniels will face opposition in Cheryl Bayne. Ward 3 Alderman Robert Ellis and Ward 4 Alderman Jeffery Woods are both unopposed.
All candidates qualified as Democrats so the races will be decided in the May 2 primary election with a May 16 run-off. No general election will take place in Kosciusko.
Ethel
Three candidates have qualified for mayor in the town of Ethel to replace Mayor Ophelia Mitchell, who will not seek re-election. Gwen Sims, Anthony Jerome Barksdale and Wade Breazeale all qualifying for the mayor position. Mitchell, Amy Thrasher, Paul Stewart, Patricia Bouley and Lyda Fair will be named the alderman with no additional candidates filing.
The mayoral election will take place during the June 6 general election.
Sallis
Six candidates filed for election in the town of Sallis including incumbents Gloria Bordelon, Shannon Lewis, Kelly Hutchison, Linda Hutchison and Brent Busbea. Reba Robertson has also qualified for a spot. The top-five candidates will be elected to the position.
Current mayor Jack Ables will be unopposed.
McCool
No election will take place in the town of McCool with current alderman Tony Smith replacing current mayor Terri Dempsey. Those qualifying for the unopposed alderman seats include: Dempsey, Kaylen Hester, Charles Ingram Jr., Margie Rosamond and Savannah Hester.
