Longtime educator and Kosciusko alderman John Douglas Sullivan, 79, died July 4, 2016 at the Martha Jo Leslie State Veterans Home in Kosciusko.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Christian Liberty M.B. Church with burial in Parkway Cemetery.
“Mr. Sullivan was full of life and made an impact on our community, not only as analderman but as an educator as well,” said Mayor Jimmy Cockroft.
Sullivan served two terms on the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen from August 1, 1996 until June 30, 2001 and from July 1, 2005 until June 30, 2013.
“John was always fair and impartial on things that impacted the City of Kosciusko and was very supportive of all the city employees while serving as Ward 4 Alderman. Every community needs more men like him. I am thankful to have served with Mr. Sullivan and for the impact he made on my life” said Mayor Cockroft.
Sullivan came to Kosciusko in 1965 and became associated with the school system. At the time of his retirement he was assistant principal at Kosciusko Junior High and Director of Transportation.
Dr. David Sistrunk, former superintendent of city schools, said that Sullivan was a great employee. “He always tried to do the right thing in every situation. He will be greatly missed,” Sistrunk said.
Sullivan, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving three years, was a member of Christian Liberty Church where he was a deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Alberta Sullivan; daughters, Regina Sullivan of Byram, Victoria Sullivan and Joan (Marvin K. Jr.) Myles of Kosciusko, Patricia Walker of Hattiesburg; sisters, Florestine Spencer and Catherine Duckworth, both of Collins.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 8, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Myricks Funeral Home.
