There are two new additions to Kosciusko Municipal Court in recent weeks — one improving safety, the other transparency and convenience.
Starting Tuesday, April 17, those entering the municipal courtroom inside the Kosciusko Police Department building were subjected to hand-held metal detectors before entering the courtroom. Individuals are also required to remove all items from their persons.
“The Chief (of Police) did that and I’m appreciative,” said Municipal Judge L. Scott Pickle. “It’s a good thing and we're seeing it in courtrooms across the state. It will help us avoid a bad situation. I appreciate the department doing this.”
The second addition is the installation of two flat screen television screens at the front of the courtroom. Once completely hooked up, everyone in the court will be able to view video entered into evidence in cases. Previously, the judge, prosecutors, attorneys, witnesses and defendants had to leave the courtroom to go to an office with a computer to view such material.
“Officer Collins is installing those,” said Pickle. “Once they’re operational everyone can view video in a case without having to go back to a computer to watch it. It’ll add to transparency within the court.”
