Local father and daughter remain hospitalized
Dlonte McGee, 21, of Jackson, was in Kosciusko Municipal Court Tuesday morning, charged in the Saturday night shooting of a father and daughter in front of their home at 513 Lucas St. in Kosciusko.
McGee turned himself into Kosciusko Police Saturday as investigators responded to the scene where the shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the street that runs along Jason Niles Park.
Upon arrival, police learned that two victims, a male resident of the home and his daughter, had both been shot and had been transported to Baptist–Attala by private vehicle.
While at the scene, investigators received a call from the station indicating that a male suspect had turned himself in at the station.
“It was a domestic situation between him and his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s father,” said Kosciusko Police Chief Herbert Dew.
The father was shot multiple times, receiving five or six bullet wounds to both of his legs, his abdomen and one of his arms, according to Dew. On Tuesday, he had reportedly undergone reconstructive surgery on one of his elbows.
His daughter, the suspect’s girlfriend, was shot in the chest near her heart, closer to the center of her torso.
“Yesterday, they had both come out of surgery and she is now off of the ventilator and was talking,” said Dew on Monday.
McGee was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Kosciusko Municipal Court Tuesday morning, each charge bringing a $50,000 bond. He will remain in the Leake County jail until he posts bond or until his preliminary hearing in city court on September 18.
Kosciusko Municipal Judge L. Scott Pickle appointed public defender Rosalind Jordan to represent McGee on the charges after the suspect indicated he could not afford to hire his own attorney.
