Spring is here and that is the season for yard sales.
One of the largest yard sales in the Central Mississippi will take place in Kosciusko and along Highway 35 from Carmack to Walnut Grove on Saturday, April 1.
It is called Picking 35 in the Heart of Mississippi and is sponsored by the Kosciusko Attala Partnership, the Leake County Chamber of Commerce and the town of Walnut Grove.
“In June of last year we did a city-wide yard sale off the recommendation of the two resale stores in town and that transformed into the monthly pop-up flea market into this,” said G.G. Holmes, Director of Community Development and Partnerships with the KAP. “We saw those events bought in increased foot traffic to town, so I mentioned it to our neighboring chambers and cities and this is what we came up with.”
With the event coming this weekend, Holmes said that she is seeing a lot of interest and there should be plenty of people on hand for the event.
“I have received calls from people around the state and also in other states trying to get more information,” Holmes added. “The new rage is to take something old and make it look new with the resurgence of these fixer-upper shows on television. People are looking for something with a little history behind it.”
Holmes added that Highway 35 is the focal point for the event, but yard sales will also be happening all over Kosciusko.
“We are going to try and direct people off of Hwy. 35 through downtown once they reach the city limits with a pop-up flea market going that day along with multiple sales from businesses on the square,” Holmes said.
There are 57 sales that have been registered with the KAP, Leake County Chamber or the town of Walnut Grove. The sale will last from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. rain or shine, however Holmes expects many sales to be up before seven.
