When Relay for Life funds were totaled in Kosciusko Friday night, approximately $45,000 was added toward a goal of $62,000 for the American Cancer Society to enable researchers to continue the search for a cure.
Cancer survivors kicked off the annual effort with a walk around the Renasant Bank area where all activities were held.
Mrs. Gina Smith, superintendent of the Kosciusko City Schools, served as emcee for the family oriented event.
The parking lot behind the bank took on a carnival atmosphere where jumpers and slides were provided for the children. Code Red paintball, knockerballs, train ride, glow run, music and face painting rounded out the entertainment offerings. Food tents were scattered over the area.
Kayla Vance, community manager for the American Cancer Society, and chairman Corrie Ramage coordinated the event. Both agreed that the turnout was good. “There was plenty of entertainment for everyone and it was a fun time,” said Vance. They thanked everyone who worked to make it a successful evening.
Cancer survivor Simone Owen told her story of diagnosis and treatment. She was joined on the stage by family members as she related related her experiences.
Winners of the Miss Relay contests were named. They were Joy Caroline Dees, Baby Miss Relay; Ava Grace Horn, Toddler Miss Relay; Rian Ramage, Tiny Miss Relay; Kailey Ann Wollfarth, Young Miss Relay; Mallory Moore, Petite Miss Relay; Baylee Nunn, Little Miss Relay; Mary Patton Henderson, Junior Miss Relay; Raven Gray, Teen Miss Relay.
At 10 p.m. the luminaria ceremony was held as names were read of those represented in the lighted luminaries which included survivors and those in whom memorials were made.
Included in the entertainment were performances by students from The Dance Company. Music was provided by Stace and Cassie Band.
Organizers thanked those who conducted fund raising projects or helped in other ways to benefit the effort and support the annual event.
