The Kosciusko-Attala Airport has a new name.
City and county officials gathered Monday to dedicate the two-runway strip airport in memory of former airport caretaker Allen Ross. Ross and co-pilot Mark Deason were killed in a plane crash last year at the intersection of Attala Road 1103 and 1106.
In Ross’s memory, the 5,000 foot runway airport off Hwy. 12 between Kosciusko and Ethel has been renamed the Kosciusko/ Attala Airport at Allen Ross Field. The airport is primarily used by local business firms and private operations.
“Allen was a staple in the community and no one will ever love this airport like he did,” Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft said. “This is such a small token for the appreciation that we have for Allen.”
Ross was a member of the Airport Advisory Board and was also the manager of the airport up until his death. He was involved with the EAA Young Eagles Program and had flown over 700 children with 1,671 flight hours. He was employed by Kosciusko Water and Light.
Another sign will be placed near the intersection of Airport Road and Hwy. 12, according to Cockroft.
