Mildred Casey has been a politician for the past 34 years but opposition has not been a problem in maintaining that longevity.
She only had one opponent for one election during her tenure.
She retired last week as a member of the Attala County Election Commission ending a career as the commissioner from District Five. The certification of the past election by the commission last week marked her last duty of the office.
Mrs. Casey said she became a commissioner in 1972, filling the unexpired term of her husband Joe Casey following his death. Holding the office came with smooth sailing she said with not having to face opposition.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed being an election commissioner,” she said. She was quick to add that she wants to continue to be involved. “I have already let it be known that I want to work at the polls,” she said.
With her enjoyment of being involved in elections, and her offer to work, she will probably be found ready to help voters who report to the Zama Precinct.
Mrs. Casey said as a member of the commission, she joins the other four members in preparing for every countywide election. “We pack supplies in every box that goes to the precincts making sure that everything required is in those boxes,” she said. On election day, she said she visits the five precincts in District Five checking to see if the workers have a need.
Johnnie Tolleson was elected to Mrs. Casey’s spot on the board. Other commissioners are Kay Chipley, District One; Annie Winters, District Two; Frankie Farmer, District Three; Virginia Clark, District Four.
The commissioners work with the circuit clerk in taking care of voter registrations.
With retirement from office duties Mrs. Casey said she will have more time to volunteer at the Visitor Center where she has been a regular for many years.
She is also involved with activities of Center Baptist Church.
