Conor Bell, new band director at Ethel High School, gave an assessment of inventory and informed regarding plans for what he termed a “rebuild situation” for the band program during the Monday night meeting of the Attala County School Board.
Bell outlined needs including instruments, equipment, furniture, added facilities and the possibility of adding the fifth grade to the program.
In rebuilding, Bell said he hoped to enter the band in district competitions in preparation for again entering state competitions in about three years.
After giving his report, Bell listed amounts needed to begin the rebuilding of the band, but said he can manage for the rest of this school year.
Board members expressed their appreciation for his efforts. Superintendent Bryan Weaver said the board will look at funding in the next budget.
The board gave its approval to re-hire district staff and non-certified staff. Other personnel action included adding a teacher unit at Ethel High School and also after-school tutorial. Resignations were accepted from Lauren Wallace at Long Creek Elementary and David Rigby at Ethel High School. Annie Hamilton was added to certified staff at Ethel.
In 16th section action, the Jimmy Harmon estate was given a 60-day extension on payment of the residential lease pending probate. Approval was granted to advertise for bids on 2,400 acres for emergency salvage.
In plans for a new field house at McAdams High School, Weaver told board members that by adding to the existing facility, there would be savings in construction costs. After his explanation, the board voted to reject bids submitted by Hawthorne Construction and McKnight and Son and re-advertise for bids on the new plan.
On policy updates, the board gave approval to allow staff members one day of leave from duty for bereavement. For students, a 50 percent day must be observed for being counted in attendance.
