All my older brothers were in the band, so I signed up in sixth grade. I made the high school band as an eighth grader in 1958, mainly because the band director, Mr. Thomas Wasson, needed another tuba player. I practiced on my own a lot and made the Lions’ All State Band as a sophomore, junior, and senior.
