The McAdams boys and girls powerlifting teams won region meets. Ethel finished second in the boys meet and fourth for the girls.Region 3-1A boys scores were McAdams 66, Ethel 44, Leake County 33, Noxapater 16 and Nanih Waiya 12.The girls Region 3 scores for Class I (1A and 2A schools) were McAdams 50, Noxapater 33, Scott Central 32, Ethel 26.McAdams boys had seven weight class winners and qualified 12 lifters for the South State meet. The top three in each weight class qualified for South State. McAdams will host the girls meet Friday and the boys meet Saturday.McAdams boys individual winners were Nate Donaldson at the 114 weight class with a total of 345 pounds for the squat, bench press and dead lift, Tydarrius Williams at 132 (815), Chaki Haywood at 148 (650), Mekyle Riley at 181 (815), D.K. Williams at 198 (880), Jaylan Perteet at 215 (1,065) and Lazavier Ellis at 220 (925).Perteet had only one day in the weight room after the Bulldogs' basketball season ended with a loss to state champion Biggersville in the 1A semifinals. “I was surprised at his strength,'' said coach Kenneth Nelson.Other qualifiers are Jimmy Wilson, third at 132, Chris Harmon, third at 165, Jatamius Roundtree, third at 242, Malique Greer, third at 275, and JaEric Jones, second at 308.The Lady Bulldogs had five individual winners and qualified eight lifters for South State. Winners were Amber Harmon at 114 (485), Alyssa Newsome at 132 (410), Shawnessy Martin at 165 (610), Jailynn Riley at 181 (540) and A'gnesha Henderson at 242-plus (605). The other qualifiers are Kristal Wilson, second at 123, Makayla Riley, third at 181, and Kaloni Thurmond, second at 242-plus.Ethel boys did not have any individual winners, but qualified eight lifters for South State. Matthew Arnold and Gage Steed were second and third at 114, Kentrell Dotson second at 132, Tyler Barksdale third at 148, Marcus Jones second at 181, Anton Clark, second at 191, Devin Granger second at 242, and Kesus Collins, third at 308-plus.Ethel girls had six qualifiers, including one winner. Zakiya Dotson was victorious at 123 with lifts totaling 450 pounds. Other qualifiers are Halley Box, third at 114, Addison Stubbs, second at 132, Jessie Martin and Lily Tipton, second and third at 148, and Jada Lambert, third at 242-plus.The top three in each weight class at South State will qualify for the state meet scheduled for April 17 at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. The state meet was not held last year due to the pandemic.
