New Attala County School District board member Sheila Rone said she will bring her expertise as a retired teacher to the board. She ran unopposed for the seat vacated by Rodger Clark, who did not seek reelection.Rone actually became interested in the possibility of being on the school board before she retired. “Two years before I retired, I was asked by some of my colleagues, as well as various people in the community, to consider being on the board. Therefore, I had a few years to think about it,” she said. “In the end, I felt as though — as a retired teacher — I could bring my educational views to the table.”Her main goal in her new position is to continue seeking excellence in the Attala County School system. Rone hopes to give students both tools and opportunities to get the best education — the kind they deserve. She expects to see students carry out future plans at the next level and become better citizens. “I am eager to work with people that share those same goals. I am also looking forward to working with the superintendent and all board members to continue their exemplary work,” she said.Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Rone thinks all students need to be in the classroom.“However, under these circumstances, some of them are not able to do so. The teachers and parents are doing their best to help their students and children,” she said. But she knows that once all students return to in-person learning, there will be work to be done.“However, when the pandemic is over, various options will be looked into in order to help all students that are falling behind,” Rone said.A graduate of Delta State University and retired after 41 years of teaching public school science in three different states — Mississippi, Arkansas, and North Carolina — Rone is the widow of Ned Rone and the mother of two sons, Brian and Zack. She has eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Six of her grandchildren are students in the Attala County School District. She also serves as the District 5 representative on the Attala County Library Board.
