McAdams High School might add softball as a spring sport for girls next year.
“Right now, we are trying to find out how much participation we will have,” said Athletic Director Kenyon Ross. “If we have the participation like I think we might have, we're planning on having it next year.”
Currently, track is the only sport for girls in the spring.
Ross' first year as athletic director was a difficult year due to the pandemic, but he said, “Overall it was a good year.”
McAdams is one of the state's smallest schools but had success in boys’ basketball, coached by Ross, and powerlifting coached by Kenneth Nelson.
The basketball team shared the Region 5-1A regular season championship, won the region tournament, then won three playoff games to reach the Big House, the 1A semifinals.
In powerlifting, McAdams girls were second in Class I (1A and 2A schools) and the boys were third in 1A.
“We're changing some things at McAdams, trying to get back to where we used to be in athletics. We still have a ways to go, but I think we are headed in the right direction. As a program, we are trying to build to the point that we should be able to compete in all sports,” Ross said. “We’re looking at our junior high programs, especially in basketball. We’re looking for a better year with our girls’ basketball program next year. We have sports like volleyball that we are trying to build.”
McAdams played volleyball for the first time last fall.
Because of the size of the school, it will take athletes competing in more than one sport, Ross said. “We’re going to have to have kids who play dual sports,” said the AD. “The coaches will have to work together and share athletes. We’re going to make it feasible.”
