Kosciusko improved to 4-0 in Region 4-4A baseball with two easy wins over Leake Central, 16-0 and 22-0. The Whippets also defeated Pisgah 7-6 last week.
“Our pitchers threw well and we made inbat adjustments,” said coach Cole McBride.
The 16-0 game lasted two and a half innings, the 22-0 game three innings, so the Whippets scored 38 runs in five at bats against Leake Central.
Ramage was the big story in the 16-0 game. He struck out all nine batters and had three triples, drove in two runs and scored three. Bennie Powell had a double and two singles with one RBI and three runs scored.
The Whippets scored five in the first and 11 in the second.
The second Leake Central game was scoreless through two innings. Then Kosciusko scored 22 runs in the third.
Powell, the Whippets' leadoff batter, had a single, a double and a walk and scored twice. Cooper Black had two his, three RBIs and scored twice and Payton Odom contributed two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Landon Wallace and Barrett Kuhn both doubled and Ramage drove in four runs.
Braxton Smith fanned the six batters he faced in the first and second innings. Bailey Powers finished up with two strikeouts in the third.
The Pisgah game was a back-and-forth affair. Pisgah took a 2-0 lead in the third, Kosciusko went ahead 4-2 in the fifth, Pisgah tied it with two in the top of the sixth before the Whippets scored four in the bottom of the inning. Pisgah rallied with three runs in the seventh, but left the tying run at third when Ramage got a ground out to end the game.
Six Pisgah errors resulted in six unearned runs.
Powell continued his hot hitting with two hits and a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. For the week he was seven for nine and scored seven runs.
“The kids battled. Played extremely well” McBride said. “We had some big hits late in the game.”
As the season reached the midway points, McBride is pleased with the progress. “Our pitchers are throwing well. We're making plays on defense. Offensively, we have gotten progressively better, without striking out as much. The guys are getting confidence and barreling up baseballs.”
Kosciusko had Spring Break games Wednesday with Madison Central and Bayou Academy at Grenada and will be at home Saturday against New Hope.
