It wasn’t the finishes that Winona Christian basketball coach Nick Mumme envisioned in the North 4A Tournament.
The Lady Stars opened with a 44-31 win over Marshall Academy and then took a big 39-33 win over Kirk Academy in the tournament semifinals. But a loaded Rossville Christian took a convincing 67-35 win over the Lady Stars in the Tournament finals.
The Winona Christian boys finished third overall. After beating Lee 61-41 in the opener, the Stars loss 70-56 to Rossville but rebounded and beat Marshall 52-47 on Saturday.
The Winona Christian girls will play in the Class 4A state tournament on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Kirk Academy while the WCS boys will play Christian Collegiate on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
Winona Christian girls 44, Marshall 31
The Lady Stars outscored the Lady Patriots in each of the first three periods and took a 13-point win to open the North 3A Tournament.
Winona led 13-11 at the end of the first and then outscored Marshall 15-11 in the second to lead 28-22 at the half. The Lady Stars then pulled away and outscored the Lady Patriots 12-5 in the third to lead 40-27 going to the fourth where each team scored four points.
Bella Roberts led Winona Christian with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four steals while Olivia Brooks had 13 points and six steals. Swayze Marquerdt had four points, five rebounds and three steals.
Winona girls 39, Kirk 33
The Lady Stars used a big fourth period to rally and beat the Lady Raiders on Friday in the tournament semifinals.
Each team scored 12 points in the first period and Kirk used an 8-4 advantage in the second period to lead 20-16 at the half. Kirk outscored Winona 10-8 in the third and led 30-24 going to the fourth. But the Lady Stars outscored the Lady Raiders 15-3 in the fourth to take the win.
Bella Roberts led Winona with 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Sara Beth Rawles had four points and six rebounds while Swyaze Marquerdt had four points and five rebounds. Olivia Brooks had four points and four steals as well.
Rossville girls 67, Winona Christian 35
The Lady Wolves opened up a big lead in the first half and cruised to a 32-point win over the Lady Stars and capture the North 4A Tournament on Saturday.
Rossville jumped out to a 27-9 lead in the first period and then outscored Winona 17-8 in the second period to lead 44-17 at the half. Rossville continued to extend its lead in the third period, outscoring Winona 18-14 to lead 62-31 going to the fourth, where each team scored five points.
Bella Roberts led Winona Christian with 23 points and five rebounds while Sara Beth Rawls also had three points and five rebounds.
Winona Christian boys 61, Lee Academy 41
The Stars dominated the first half and cruised to a 20-point win over the Colts in the opener of the North 4A Tournament.
Winona Christian led 16-5 at the end of the firs and then outscored lee 24-16 in the second and led 40-21 at the half. Winona then outscored Lee 13-12 in the third and each team scored eight points in the fourth period.
The Stars put four players in double digits as Jake Ware led the way with 22 points and four rebounds. Collin Parkinson had 17 points while Reese Cooper had 11 points and eight rebounds. Jack Sorgen had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Rossville Academy 70, Winona 56
The Wolves outscored the Stars in three of the four periods and took a 14-point win in the tournament semifinals on Friday.
Rossville led 16-8 at the end of the first and outscored Winona 15-12 in the second to lead 31-20 at the half. Winona fought back and outscored Rossville 19-15 in the third to cut the lead to 46-39 going to the fourth. But Rossville pulled away and outscored Winona 24-17 in the fourth to take the win.
Reese Johnson led Winona with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Jake Ware had 10 points and six rebounds. Collin Parkinson also had nine points.
Winona Christian boys 52, Marshall 47
The Stars pulled away in the fourth period to take a five-point win over the Patriots and finish third in the tournament.
Winona led 11-9 at the end of the first but Marshall took the second period 13-11 to tie the game at 22-22 at the half. Each team scored 11 points in the third period and Winona then outscored Marshall 19-14 in the fourth to take the win.
Reese Johnson had another double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds while Reese Cooper had 14 points and six rebounds. Jake Ware also had eight points.
