When Mary Dodd needs the convenience of a paperweight, she does not have to search.
At her fingertips is a collection of over 100 collected over a period of years. She has them displayed in her home in the Springdale Community.
She is sharing her collection with a display showcased at the Attala County Library where patrons will be able to enjoy the collection for several weeks in a case located near the checkout desk.
The colors of the rainbow are reflected in the myriad of objects in forms ranging from a snowman to a teapot.
Mrs. Dodd said her collecting began at an estate sale where she made the first purchase. “I have bought them at the Natchez Trace Festival, antique stores and other places,” she said.
When family members noted her interest she said she began getting paperweights as gifts at Christmas, birthdays and other occasions.
“My children have added a number to my collection. I have a son who travels to Illinois in his work and he has bought some,” she said. Other children on travels have made additions. One from France was added by a son and represents coming from the greatest distance. There is one from China.
When she gets a new one she said she places it in her kitchen window and enjoys it every day. “It makes me happy,” she said.
Mrs. Dodd boasts another collection that represents the dairy industry. She and her husband George own and operate the only dairy operation in Attala County. She said churns, butter molds and other memorabilia relating to dairying make up that collection.
The paperweights can be seen at the Attala County Library during regular hours.
