On the 75th anniversary, of Pearl Harbor, Melissa Simpson and Ann Breedlove from the Attala County Library staff, entertained the residents of the Martha Jo Leslie VA Nursing Center for their monthly Coffee Break.
The coffee break is sponsored by the local VFW Auxiliary and takes place every first Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. Melissa sang Christmas carols, patriotic songs, and hymns; Ann accompanied her on the piano.
After the Coffee Break, Ann asked the members of the VFW and the VFW Auxiliary to talk about the activities that will be taking place before Christmas.
The VFW and VFW Auxiliary held their Christmas meal on Dec. 8 and gave pins to the winners of the Voice of Democracy Award and the Patriot Pin Award. This contest involves local school children who write essays about Patriotism.
On Dec. 12, there was a meeting in the local VA nursing center, open to members of the American Legion and Auxiliary and to the VFW and VFW Auxiliary for the purpose of discussing and working out any problems that may have occurred at the Aisle of Honor Ceremony on Veterans Day.
The American Legion Christmas meal will be on Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
The meal for the residents at the nursing center will be on Dec. 16. After the meal, Darrell and Jackie Truelove will present “Ice Cream and Karaoke.”
On December 17, at 10 a.m. the residents of the nursing center will play Bingo.
Mervin Foster reported that he is pleased with the number of people who have visited the Veterans Service Office in the past month. He and Janie Wallace, who works with him, would like to see more veterans’ widows, since some of them do not know how to make applications for possible widows’ benefits.
