Kosciusko softball reached Spring Break with eight wins in the last nine games, including three last week. The Lady Whippets won their first two Region 4-4A game with victories over Leake Central 8-0 and 7-3 and defeated Florence 7-5.
“We're playing better,” said coach Tony Terry. “We started out slow with some new people. We have won eight of nine against a pretty good schedule. I just hope everybody will get well by the time of the playoffs.”
Gracie Williams pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the 8-0 win over Leake Central. The Whippets scored a run in the first, added three in the third and broke the game open with four in the sixth. Williams had a single and a double and Mary Kimble Price two singles.
Price went the first six innings in the 7-3 win and Williams finished up with a one-two-three seventh, a ground out and two strikeouts.
The Whippets scored two runs in the second, three in the fourth and two in the sixth. All three Leake Central runs came in the fifth, on four straight hits after two outs, including triples by Kelby Harvey and Jamae Wright.
Graycee Rosamond had a single and a triple, drove in four runs and scored two for Kosciusko. Makynlee Dickerson had two hits and scored twice.
In the Florence game, Anna Grace Whithead homered, singled and drove in three runs. Williams singled, doubled and went the distance, allowing nine hits with four strikeouts.
In her first year as a starter, Rosamond has been a key contributor. “She's hitting .423 and playing a good third base. She has been a big asset,” Terry said.
Kosciusko will be off until two region games with Louisville, on the road March 21 and at home March 23.
“This is the first time I haven't played at Spring Break in a long time,” Terry said. “It comes at a good time because we have had so many injuries and illnesses. It's good to have the break.”
