The Winona Christian softball team saw its season come to an end at the Class 4A state Tournament this week.
The Lady Stars opened with a 12-3 loss to Tri-County on Saturday and then beat Lee 14-5 on Saturday to advance to Monday’s play.
The Lady Stars then saw their season come to an end with a 9-2 loss to Marshall Academy.
Winona Christian finishes the season with a 20-11 record.
Tri-County 12, Winona Christian 3
The Lady Stars fell behind early and weren’t able to come back as they got sent to the loser’s bracket on Saturday.
Tri-County started fast with six runs in the top of the first. Winona answered with sing runs in the first and second to cut the score to 6-2. Tri-County finished with one in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Tri-County outhit Winona 11-6 in the contest but the Rebels took advantage of seven errors by the Lady Stars. Lennie Wood was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Miranda McDaniel also doubled and drove in a run. Bella Roberts also singled and scored.
Sara Rawles started in the circle and gave up four urns on one hit in the first inning. Brantley Stanford pitched the remainder of the game, going up eight runs, only three earned on 10 hits and four walks.
Winona Christian 14, Lee 5
The Lady Stars scored in every inning and took a nine-run win on Saturday in a loser’s bracket game.
Winona scored two in the first and four in the second to go up 6-0. Lee answered with five in the third to cut the lead to 6-5. But Winona answered with one in the third, four in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Winona had 14 hits in the contest, including a big game from Allie Leach who was 5-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and six RBIs. Sara Rawles was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Lennie Wood was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Bella Roberts was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored while Teri Cain and Haley Beckwith each scored two runs apiece.
Brantley Stanford started in the circle and pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits and two walks. Rawles pitched the last 4 2/3 innings and didn’t give up a hit and struck out seven.
Marshall 9, Winona Christian 2
The Lady Stars saw their season come to an end against the Lady Patriots.
Winona opened with two runs in the first inning while Marshall answered with three in the second and two in the third, fourth and fifth. Winona had five hits but committed six errors in the field. Lennie Wood was 2-for-4 and scored a run while Teri Cain was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Allie Leach also singled and drove in a run.
Brantley Stanford pitched all six innings and gave up nine runs, only one earned, on 10 hits and two walks.
