Taylor McDole's first year as Kosciusko volleyball coach began Tuesday with a match against East Webster. The Lady Whippets had a scrimmage with Ethel July 21.
“We had only one day of practice, so they were still kind of knocking off the rust,” McDole said of the scrimmage. “You could see that we were getting the hang of things.”
McDole moves to Kosciusko as head volleyball and assistant softball coach after two years in the same positions at Perry Central. She inherits a team that won Region 4-4A last year, but lost to Caledonia in the opening round of the MHSAA.
“We still have some things we need to work on getting back in a volleyball mindset, but I think we are going to be okay. I’m excited.”
McDole did not want to single out any players at this time, but said she is looking at the seniors for leadership. The keys to success, she said, will be “heart and hustle.”
Among returning players, Kaitlin Broyles was Offensive Player of the Year last year, Makynlee Dickerson Defensive Player of the Year and Maggie Steed Most Improved.
Kosciusko will compete in 4-4A with Greenwood, Louisville and Yazoo City.
The schedule includes 18 matches, including home and home with region opponents, and a tournament at Winona August 27.
