Kosciusko High School is the recipient of an award for sportsmanship.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association reinitiated the award this year, with one school from each of the state's eight districts honored. MHSAA executive director Rickey Neaves announced that Kosciusko received the award for District IV at a district meeting.
“Sportsmanship was a big initiative last year as it is every year,” Neaves said. “At one time we had given these awards in each district, and we felt like it was time to reinstate those awards. We encourage everyone to show sportsmanship year round.
He said the criteria for the award is how a school deals with officials and how fans react at home and on the road. “Just how their teams and coaches conduct themselves in all sports in all venues.”
“I'm as proud as I can be as an athletic director,” said Kosciusko’s Macy Wilbanks. “It shows that we are not only focused trying to put out student athletes, but as a community we are devoted to being good people. It shows the character of the people of Kosciusko and I'm happy that we were recognized for that effort.”
Neaves said Kosciusko displayed sportsmanship in all sports. “Fans, coaches and everyone involved did an excellent job in promoting sportsmanship wherever they went.”
Signing secretaries for each sport, district secretaries and two others in each district who viewed contests throughout the year made nominations. “Then we tallied them up,” Neaves said.
