Sometimes it all comes together – hitting pitching and defense.
Such was the case for Kosciusko when the Lady Whippets played a softball game at Germantown Monday. Germantown is a strong 6A team that defeated Kosciusko 8-6 in the season opener, has a win over Northwest Rankin, the state's top ranked team, and won Region 5-6A.
But on this night it was all Kosciusko in a 12-0 five inning game.
Hitting – The Lady Whippets' nine hits included three home runs.
Pitching – Anna Grace Whitehead pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
At one point she fanned six straight batters and she accomplished the unusual feat of four strikeouts in an inning. One batter reached base when the third strike got away from Kosciusko catcher Gracie Kate Burrell.
Defense – The Lady Whippets played errorless ball highlighted by a diving catch by Laura Wood in left field.
Kosciusko scored one run in the second. Makynlee Dickerson singled with two outs, stole second and scored on a single by Wood. The Whippets broke it open with six in the third, including a grand slam by Whitehead. Asked if she was happiest with her pitching or hitting, Whitehead said “both.”
Kosciusko added five more in the fifth on a two-run homer by Wood and a three-run homer Mary Kimble Price, a blast that went at least 250 feet.
