Kosciusko volleyball closed out Region 4-4A play with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-13 victory over Yazoo City. The Lady Whippets were 6-0 in region play – two wins each against Yazoo City, Greenwood and Louisville – with the loss of only one set in the six matches.
Kosciusko will be at home next Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match with Caledonia in the opening round of the MHSAA 4A playoffs.
Kaitlyn Broyles led the Lady Whippets against Yazoo City with 13 aces and three kills. Lizzie Kate Jones also had 13 aces.
Interim Coach Cory Guyton said his players served and returned serve well.
“We came out ready to play. They put everything together,” he said of his team.
Guyton directed the team this year because Nikki Stephenson is on maternity leave.
“Coach Nikki set the foundation,” he said. “It was easy for me to come in.”
Caledonia and Pontotoc both went 7-1 in 2-1A. They split matches but Pontotoc earned the top seed for the playoffs as a result of a 5-4 edge in sets. Pontotoc will host the runner-up from 4-4A, either Greenwood or Louisville.
“They’re fundamentally sound,” Guyton said of Caledonia. “It’s going to be a tough match. We will have to buckle down in practice.”
He said he will not emphasize any particular part of the game in preparation.
“We want to make sure we are ready in every aspect of the game,” he said.
Kosciusko closed out the regular season Monday with a 3-0 loss to Starkville, a 6A team.
