Turnovers, special team mistakes, and the inability to finish drives hurt McAdams in a season ending 54-6 loss to McEvans.
The Hawks scored seven touchdowns despite having only 236 yards of offense.
“There were a lot of times we went for it on fourth down and gave them a short field,” Coach Kenneth Nelson said.
McAdams scored on a 10-yard run by Jalen Greer.
Nelson said the offensive line played well.
“We just didn't do a good enough job on defense stopping their running backs before they got started,” said the coach.
McAdams finishes 1-9 and 1-6 in Region 2-1A, tied for sixth with West Bolivar and Coldwater. The Bulldogs defeated West Bolivar but had to forfeit against Coldwater while the school was virtual. That was Coldwater's only win. The Cougars were shut out by West Bolivar.
McAdams was a young team, mostly sophomores and freshmen.
“I'm glad the young guys got the experience they need,” Nelson said. “We had to take a little thumping this year that will make us better.”
Four Bulldogs received all region honors. Defensive lineman Malique Greer and defensive back Triniko Brown were first team. Running back Jalen Greer and offensive lineman Lazavie Ellis are on the second team. Simmons senior running back Vontrez Rush was chosen as Player of the Year by the region coaches.
The top four teams in the region, Simmons, South Delta, McEvans and West Tallahatchie, are in the 1A playoffs beginning Friday.
“Simmons is the best team in the state,” Nelson said.
McEvans finished second, South Delta third, and West Tallahatchie fourth. McEvans defeated South Delta, but Nelson feels that South Delta is the better team.
“McEvans is bigger,” he said. “It was their size that shocked me.”
